Danny Osborne is an international artist currently based in Ireland and Canada. At the core of his practice is a connection to the geologic landscape. He communicates what he learns from a deep engagement with natural phenomena. Osborne looks at rock formations as a means of expression of the earth’s crust – this has inspired his interest in volcanic and glacial environments, as well as his mastery in stone carving. In the arctic, he embarked on solo expeditions to remote regions to paint and sculpt with material that he extracted from the land.
Osborne discovered his passion for volcanoes and lava material after a trip to the Andes in 1984. Over the course of four extensive trips working on volcanoes in Guatemala and Hawaii, he has invented a technique to cast lava into sculpture directly from an active volcanic vent. His work has resulted in a year-long travelling exhibition across Ireland.
